I was thrilled to attend the launch of The Marriage Foundation at Middle Temple Hall on Monday. I had expected those invited to consist mostly of family lawyers but I couldn’t have been more wrong…

It was refreshing to meet a range of professionals whose work in some way touches the lives of those who experience marriage breakdown, such as marriage counsellors, mental health professionals, youth workers and religious leaders as well as my legal peers.

Senior High Court Judge Sir Paul Coleridge, the foundation’s founder Windows 7 64 bit key, opened proceedings by explaining his reasons for establishing the foundation and its aims over the coming months. Its fundamental concern, he said, was family breakdown and its “destructive effects on the lives of children… We aim to reduce the number of children caught up in the family justice system and the misery which they experience,” he added.

As family lawyers, we see this first-hand, and it is usually the children who are caught in the crossfire. However, Sir Paul explained that it is possible to have “healthier relationships that are less likely to break down” leading to benefits not just for the couple and the children of those marriages but for society as a whole.

I often work with counsellors and other mental health professionals to repair the damage caused to children in these circumstances and see the tragic impact on children’s wellbeing up close.

As such, in the 17 years I have practiced family law, I’ve become rather unshockable in terms of the reasons why people give up on a marriage and how they fail to appreciate the impact this has on their children. And it’s not always a generation thing; more than 11,500 couples aged 60 plus were divorced in England and Wales in 2009. Moreover, the over 60s is the only age group where divorce is increasing.

While this may be a symptom of many couples of younger generations tending to live together rather than marrying, the increase in the silver divorce is very much a new trend. I have certainly seen an increase in the amount of clients divorcing after 30 years of marriage or more.

While any divorce is a tragedy for any couple, it’s always particularly sad to divorce a client where they have spent the majority of their life with their spouse, watched their children and grand-children grow up and now be at the stage in life where they have substantial time to devote to each other again.

There isn’t just one factor to blame for increase in marriage breakdown; rather it would appear to be a combination of current beliefs in society and a change in our outlook. We now live in a society where it is more socially acceptable to divorce than it ever was before, thus the stigma of divorce has by and large been removed.

We also live in a very disposable age Windows 7 64 bit key, one where we are far more likely to throw something away and start afresh with a new product, item or friendship rather than try to mend the first one, and marriage has also been tainted by this attitude.

Sir Paul made the point that rather than throwing a marriage away, we should get back to putting in the hard work needed to ensure the marriage survives. Every marriage goes through difficult times but the rewards of working on it and making it work are endless, both for the family unit and society.

The rewards are numerous and include improved health and wellbeing (a recent survey shows the health gain from marriage ‘may be as large as the benefit of giving up smoking’), and that those raised within a marriage fare best both in childhood and in later life, what’s more, they’re also increasingly likely to succeed academically and in their professional life.

We are living longer than ever before and many may fear their extended years of retirement stuck in a marriage that hasn’t been happy for some time.

Since a change in UK divorce law in 2000, women who have had a traditional family arrangement where the wife stays at home to care for the family and the husband works have had their domestic endeavours recognised as being equally valuable as those of their breadwinning husbands. Unless there are unusual circumstances of a case, after a long marriage, a wife can now expect her 50% of the assets rather than only having her ‘reasonable needs’ met as was the case previously in law.

Women are now also encouraged to be financially independent of their husbands. More high-earning roles are filled by women who as a result have never been dependent on their husband’s salary so a divorce will not be a choice between financial survival and happiness.

As late as the 1970s, more couples tended to marry in their early twenties, often before they had a chance to achieve any of their professional and personal ambitions.

I have seen clients who married early then want to achieve their personal goals later in life once responsibility for young children has passed. Many of us change considerably in our twenties and early thirties as we form our view of the world.

Clients have confessed to me in the past that they changed in the early years of their marriage when their children were young but decided to stay in the marriage until the children had grown up, which is certainly not a new phenomenon. In years gone by, exiting a marriage even when the children had flown the nest still would not have been an option because of the stigma in society of being a divorcee.

The aim of the Marriage Foundation is to increase the rate of marriage and reduce the rate of divorce through “… a sustained and intelligent campaign of persuasion and developing a presence on the internet which will provide everything any individual or couple would want about marriage”.

For want of a better description, it will educate regarding the institution of marriage and its benefits.

In my view, this will succeed most through education, namely, educating teenagers about the benefits and responsibilities of marriage. Young people may have picked up negative views of marriage from their upbringing and take those views into their own adult relationships, causing another generation to hold the same negative views.

So much of our society today is based on rights; human rights, the right to family life, the right to a fair trial, the right to freedom of speech. What about the rights of children to be raised in a committed marriage? This education should focus on responsibilities as a married couple and prioritise those above rights.

Secondly, educating those contemplating marriage about the reality of married life is essential. The voluntary Marriage Preparation Course is run by the Anglican Church and provides invaluable guidance of the common problems that can arise in marriage, particularly in the early years, and teaches the skills to overcome them.

Those who have taken this course have described to me how much it helped them face the usual challenges of married life and equipped with a framework in which to deal with these problems, particularly in terms of communication. “I don’t think our marriage would have survived without it” is how one lady rated its effectiveness.

Non-religious alternatives for those where faith is not part of their lives are also available, as are specifically-targeted courses for second marriages and step families. Stepfamilies are the fastest growing family type in the UK, but according to a Care for the Family survey, only 7% of those marrying again had received any specific guidance about marrying a partner with children.

If such courses were compulsory, it would force couples to face the reality of their married life ahead rather than making the party aspect of their wedding day the most important factor, and would remind ourselves of the ability to rely on the wider family unit and friends to support married couples through difficult times.

As part of the marriage ceremony, the couple’s family and friends commit to supporting the couple through their married life. I wonder how this really converts in practice and how Sir Paul would envisage reminding us of our duty to help those close to us in such circumstances. Perhaps this could form part of the teaching of teenagers or of engaged couples for committing to helping family and friends in those marriages as well as seeking such support themselves.

Sir Paul is right in his intent with the Marriage Foundation: a shock to the system is what is now needed to bring us back to the old-fashioned values of marriage. Cohabitation simply does not provide the same benefits and security Windows XP Key, no matter how the figures are dressed up.

We are today in a very different world to the one in which the older generations married and human relationships are always at risk in such changing times. Sir Paul has a wealth of supporters in his quest and I, for one, will be backing him fully.

A foiled al Qaeda bomb plot meant to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death did not endanger any American lives replica watches, President Obama said, adding that he was “on top of this the entire time.”

“I was briefed on this in April,” Obama told ABC News’ Robin Roberts in an exclusive interview. “At no point were American lives in danger or American aircraft in danger.”

While Obama would not comment on the specifics of the operation, he stressed in his first public comments on the case that the U.S. is “learning lessons” from the intercepted explosive device, now in FBI custody.

“I don’t think it should be any surprise,” Obama said of reports of a new wave of al Qaeda bomb makers determined to take down an American airliner.

“I’ve been very clear that, even with the death of Bin Laden, even as weakened as Al Qaeda is, if you have a bunch of extremists who are adamant about trying to kill civilians then we are going to have to maintain constant vigilance and create a whole series of layers of protection and barriers,” he said.

“And, you know, fortunately replica watches, what we’ve seen is constant improvement on the part of our law enforcement, our military [and] our intelligence officers that allows us to be able to prevent the kind of attack that we just saw.”

Obama warned against complacency, telling Roberts that the nation’s security apparatus will have to “just keep on working as hard as we can to make sure that folks don’t get hurt.”

On Monday replica watches, the government announced it had successfully thwarted a plot by a Yemen-based al Qaeda terrorist who had planned to use a modified underwear bomb to destroy a U.S.-bound commercial airplane.

The 12-year-old student said he got up to sharpen a pencil at Bluffton Middle School on Wednesday when Mulholland grabbed him by his collar and said, “come here, Jew,” police said. The teacher then dragged him 10 feet under a table and made the comment about Nazis Luos Handmade Machines, according to police.

The seventh-grade teacher Tattoo power supplies, Patricia Mulholland, claims she was trying to teach the students a lesson about the Holocaust.

“What was a demonstrative attempt to teach about World War II and the Holocaust has been taken to mean an anti-Semitic rant and it was nothing like that,” said her attorney, Robert Ferguson.

Advertisement:

Mulholland was arrested and faces charges of assault and battery and public disorderly conduct, Bluffton Police spokesman Lt. Joe Babkiewicz said.

Ferguson said Mulholland is a well-regarded teacher and hasn’t had any problems during her 23-year career with Beaufort County schools.

“This is such a sensitive topic. But what do you determine is instructive teaching? Where is that line?” Ferguson said.

School district officials said Mulholland was placed on administrative leave Thursday. The district is sharing any information it has with police and will conduct its own investigation once the criminal probe is finished.

Police would not identify the student and refused to say whether he was Jewish.

Bluffton is located along the coast in the southeastern part of the state.

This piece is part of a series of blogs by leading NGOs to call attention to a range of issues that should be raised at the G8 summit at Camp David in rural Maryland from May 18-19.

What would you do if you knew we aren’t doing all we could to fight a health problem that was responsible for 63 percent of all deaths in 2008? And what if we could save countless lives from this health problem and drastically reduce human suffering worldwide with interventions we know will work?

Sadly, each year, about 36 million people die from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) — primarily cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory diseases. None of these NCDs — or chronic diseases, as they’re commonly called — are recognized by world leaders in key places such as the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) or the U.S. Global Health Initiative. In fact, many people are surprised to learn chronic diseases are not just diseases prevalent in more affluent nations, but also are among the greatest health threats to developing nations. A surprising 80 percent of NCD deaths occur in low-to middle-income countries. Young mothers Tattoo Guns And Kits, factory workers, and family breadwinners of all ages are increasingly confronted by the devastating health and economic impact of these diseases.

This month, as government leaders gather for the G8 meeting in Camp David, we urge them to consider the looming health and economic costs of chronic disease. NCDs strike young and old alike and claim far too many of our most productive citizens. The World Economic Forum estimates NCDs will cause a staggering $47 trillion drain on the global economy in the next two decades, and yet NCDs receive less than 3 percent of developmental funding for health each year, according to the Center for Global Development. Most cases of NCDs are associated with a handful of common risk factors, such as smoking and obesity. Many risk factors can also be controlled through cost-effective policy measures Tattooing Machines, such as tobacco taxes and clean indoor air laws. The G8 group should acknowledge the profound human and economic toll of chronic diseases and support efforts to bring them under control swiftly. To do otherwise is to ignore a virtual tsunami of needless suffering and death that is coming if we do not intervene.

Last year Tattoo Inks, the United Nations held a historic meeting on NCDs — only the second health meeting of its kind in history. The meeting brought significant progress, as all 194 UN Member States voted in favor of taking real steps to address NCDs, acknowledging chronic disease as a global health threat — and one that needs to be a priority for nations everywhere. One outcome is a World Health Organization Monitoring Framework on NCDs that is currently being developed. The framework will establish goals for reducing NCDs and their risk factors and structures for monitoring progress. The May 2012 World Health Assembly in Geneva will be an important opportunity to move this process forward by securing broad commitment from member nations for this framework.

However, efforts to tackle NCDs should not rest solely on the shoulders of governments and multilaterals. If we are to bring these diseases under control, we must have a commitment and cooperation from all sectors. Civil society, industry and media all have important roles to play in helping to control the looming tsunami of disease. The private sector and funding organizations should integrate prevention and control of these diseases into their philanthropic and corporate social responsibility planning. Additionally, the media needs to become more informed and consistently cover the human and economic impact of these diseases and the low-cost interventions that we know could save lives today.

Developed nations have made great strides in tackling chronic disease. We now know that cost-effective interventions can save lives in the most populous and resource-challenged regions of the world. It’s our collective responsibility to give everyone a fighting chance against these diseases. Because chronic disease knows no boundaries.

Mitt Romney’s sole claim to the presidency is that his business experience will enable him to accelerate job growth in America.

The GOP debates revealed that Romney was a failure as governor, with Massachusetts 47th in the nation in job growth, and only one of the four states that did not recover to pre-2001 recession job levels before the Bush/Cheney economic collapse hit.

But, let us talk less about rankings, and more about actual jobs.

What is that story? Again, for Romney it is dismal.

During Romney’s four years as Governor of Massachusetts, he added 61,000 new jobs. At the time Christian Audigier Clothing sale, Massachusetts had 2.5 percent of the nation’s population. Thus, extrapolated to the nation as a whole, Romney would have added 2.4 million jobs.

In four years.

During the first three years of President Obama’s Administration, 4.1 million new private-sector jobs have been added.

Governor Romney’s 2.4 million jobs is not quite 60 percent of President Obama’s 4.1 million. That is, President Obama has added 40 percent more jobs in absolute terms than Mitt Romney in ¾ of the time.

Romney is now comparing himself to President Jimmy Carter, seeming to believe that anyone would believe that he, Romney, is somehow tougher or better than the former president. Why Romney would believe that others would come to such conclusions is baffling.

We have already dispelled the notion that Romney, who avoided military service as if it were a plague, could hold a national security candle to President Carter.

But, what about job growth? Jimmy Carter was a former peanut farmer, without the Wall Street experience or savvy that Mitt Romney proclaims his Bain experience provides him. So, how could President Carter possibly have added jobs, especially with the Arab oil embargo, the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan with which Carter had to contend?

Right? Sorry, Mitt, wrong again. Under President Carter, America added 10 million jobs in four years Cheap Emilio Pucci Dresses, a faster pace than under President Reagan, and just slightly slower than under President Clinton.

Romney’s extrapolated-to-the-nation job growth during his tenure as governor is less than 25 percent of President Carter’s record.

Still want to compare your jobs record to President Carter, Mitt?

You might do better picking on someone more like you — such as George W. Bush.

Audi, Mercedes, BMW and VW offer their premium SUVs in diesel flavors, and that’s got Porsche rethinking its stance re: the Cayenne. According to a Porsche PR rep in Canada, the American managers are thinking about bringing the oil-burner this way in order to fill that hole. Two years ago, Porsche tested and then confirmed a diesel Cayenne for the American market that would use Audi’s 3.0 TDI. It was supposed to arrive early last year; obviously, that never happened.

We drove the Euro-spec diesel Cayenne last year, and walked away thinking it’s a “no-brainer for the American market.” With the new Cayenne having lost all that weight and increased its performance, a diesel engine would pull even better. And if the numbers stand, with overall diesel-vehicle sales in North America predicted to hit around 250 Tattoo Supplies,000 units in 2014 Tattoo Supplies, it could be that Porsche thinks it’s a no-brainer as well.

Andy Pilgrim won his second race of 2007 this past weekend to secure Cadillac a Manufacturers Championship of the SCCA Speed World Challenge. Pilgrim started second in the race behind polesitter and points leader Randy Pobst, but took the lead on lap 21 eventually won by just under two seconds. Fellow team drivers Lawson Aschenbach and Ron Fellows finished sixth and seventh Emilio Pucci Dresses sale, respectively. Cadillac finished the season with 71 points followed by Porsche with 60, Chevrolet with 50 Herve Leger gown sale, and Dodge with 24.

After the race, Cadillac announced that this would be the brand’s last season in the series, at least for a while. “With the second-generation CTS-V still a year away from its introduction Discount DKNY Clothing, we’ll close this chapter of Cadillac in racing and explore future opportunities to showcase the performance of the Cadillac portfolio,” he said. They referred to the current car as the “first generation” Discount Missoni Dresses, so we can only hope that this means that a second generation will follow.

Cadillac ends its dominant four-year run in the Speed World Challenge as the most successful team during that time. CTS-V drivers racked up twelve wins Cheap Herve Leger gown, the most of any manufacturer DKNY Clothing sale, as well as two manufacturer championships.

The Washington Post leads with worry among Democrats that the long and increasingly nasty nomination battle is hurting the party. The New York Times leads locally, with the acquittal of three New York police officers who killed an unarmed man with 50 bullets two years ago. The Los Angeles Times leads with U.S. officials accusing Iran of increasing its violent activities in Iraq. The Wall Street Journal tops its world-wide newsbox with China’s offer to meet with a representative of the Dalai Lama.

The Post says “African Americans and wealthy liberals” are becoming concerned about the fallout of the negative turn of the Obama-Clinton battle. The former group is represented by James Clyburn, a high-ranking Democratic congressman who is uncommitted. “If this party is perceived by people as having gone into a back room somewhere and brokered a nominee, that would not be good for our party,” he told the paper, in remarks that echoed what he told the NYT a day earlier. The “wealthy donors” angle, though, is an intriguing one: According to campaign finance records released this week, 73 top Clinton donors wrote their first checks to Obama in March. None of Obama’s deep-pocketed supporters Replica DKNY Clothes, by contrast, defected to Clinton.

The LAT adds that one of Clinton’s top fundraisers is switching sides, and a WSJ piece on the role of Bill Clinton in the campaign suggests a reason why his wife has not yet stepped aside despite the increasing calls to do so: “Known as a bad loser, Mr. Clinton privately buttresses his wife’s drive to push on, telling her, according to aides: ‘We’re not quitters.’ “

The shooting of Sean Bell in New York (a story also fronted by the Post) did not spark the same level of outrage as previous police shootings have, the Times notes. “This was due in part to the race of the officers—two of the three on trial were black—and to the response of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who reached out to the victim’s family in a stark contrast to the response of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani after Mr. Diallo was killed,” the paper writes.

Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a Pentagon news conference yesterday that Iran was increasing its shipments of arms to militants in Iraq, and pointedly warned Tehran. “I have reserve capability, particularly in our Navy and our Air Force,” Mullen said. “So it would be a mistake to think that we are out of combat capability.”

The Post and NYT stuff the story, and the NYT has a detailed analysis of the U.S. administration’s claims against Iran. (Were they preparing a story and put it out early based on Mullen’s comments?) It finds, unsurprisingly Cheap Missoni Dresses, that there is much more nuance to the situation than President Bush and other top officials claim, and that Iranian involvement is not necessarily getting larger but instead more refined. Iran has developed “a formal and sophisticated training program” for Shiites in Iraq “that included five courses on tactics Christian Audigier Clothes sale, leadership, training, commando operations and weapons and explosives. Graduates of the training program are expected to return to Iraq and train other Iraqis DKNY Clothes sale, the officials said,” according to the Times.

The Journal notes that, even if Chinese officials and representatives of the Dalai Lama were to meet, it wouldn’t necessarily bear fruit. The two sides talked six times between 2002 and 2007. “Envoys of the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama made little progress on Tibet’s links to China—such as agreeing when it was, and wasn’t, historically part of the country, for example —or steps to broaden Tibet’s autonomy under Chinese rule Buy Christian Audigier Clothing,” the paper writes.

The NYT also puts the story on the front page, and quotes a Chinese analyst on Beijing’s possible intentions. “They want the Dalai Lama to help them relieve pressure before the Olympics. But is it a sincere move, or just a public relations move?” he asks.

Also in the papers… In China, there is no reprieve from bulldozers making way for Olympic facilities, the Post finds. And its pilots are badly overworked, says the LAT. Texas officials trying to take care of the 462 children seized at a renegade Mormon ranch are trying hard not to expose them to too much culture shock, the NYT finds. The makers of a new documentary film on Abu Ghraib paid some interviewees and that has provoked controversy, the NYT reports. New discoveries in Afghanistan show that oil painting developed in Asia 800 years before it did in Europe, the LAT reports. The NYT has a feature on upscale nudist vacations, remarkable especially for the photo slide show which entertainingly depicts all sorts of naked people without running askance of the values of a family newspaper. People with contact lenses, Lasik surgery, or perfectly fine vision are increasingly wearing non-prescription eyeglasses because they’re cool Replica DKNY Dresses, the Journal reports. And the LAT has a front-page feature on the father of a soldier killed in Iraq, who “knows his son’s story sounds like one you’ve heard before. He knows you probably don’t care to read about another dead soldier. He wants you to pay attention anyway.” And you should—it’s a heartbreaking read.

This morning we get our first “clear” look at the next generation BMW 3 Series as one of our intrepid spy photographers captured one sitting on a trailer somewhere in Germany. The newest version of BMW’s mainstream model is expected to debut sometime in 2011 as 2012 model. Judging from these shots Missoni Dresses sale, it does not appear that the size of the new 3 will change much Buy Marc Jacobs Dresses, although we can expect BMW to implement some weight reduction measures in order to help meet new fuel efficiency and emissions standards. The overall proportions look pretty similar to today’s car, but the profile shot indicates a more upright grille stance similar to the new Z4 and 5 Series GT.

The next 3 is also expected to adopt some new powertrains including a new turbocharged and direct-injected three-cylinder engine. When the new 3 arrives here in the U.S. Cheap Emilio Pucci Dresses, it will likely also mark the return of four-cylinder engines to the brand’s U.S. lineup Replica Christian Audigier Clothes, to which we say Cheap DKNY Clothes, bring on the fuel savings. While Mercedes-Benz has been steadily re-integrating its four-seat coupes and cabrios into their corresponding sedan ranges, BMW is reportedly preparing to go the other way. Word from Car Magazine has it that the Bavarian automaker is preparing to launch the next-generation versions of its 1 Series and 3 Series coupes and convertibles as the 2 Series and 4 Series Replica Dewitt Watches, respectively.

The move would correspond well to the 6 Series Best place to buy Replica Michele Watches, the coupe and convertible that sits between the 5 Series and 7 Series sedans. It’s not the first time BMW has considered such a move Rolex Replica Watches, having come close to spinning the two-door 3 Series into a 4 Series about a decade ago.

Audi recently completed a similar shift Buy Cheap Replica Free Gift Watches, replacing the A4 convertible with the A5. That model has since spawned a five-door Sportback Fake Audemars Piguet Watches for sale, in whose company BMW may soon find itself with the 3 Series GT that may likewise be badged as a 4 Series.
